Candidate/Pledge Expectations
Goals Of Candidate/Pledge Education
- Develop a sound knowledge of the ideals, principles, concepts, and history of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
- Enable each candidate to know each man in the chapter well enough to call him “brother”.
- Develop a sense of pride in being both Greek and a Sigma Nu.
- Enhance chapter unity, in addition to building candidate class unity.
- Develop a high sense of honor, responsibility and accountability to brother, chapter, and national fraternity.
- Have a sound knowledge of chapter operations and programs.
- Instill a desire to see this chapter be the best it can be, both as the Gamma Kappa Chapter and in the ranks of Sigma Nu National.
The goals outlined the purpose of the Gamma Kappa candidate program. Be aware of them and stive to accomplish each goal as you complete your pledge semester.
Candidate/Pledge Semester Rules
- To learn, study, and live by the principles of my fraternity, and act in a manner becoming a Sigma Nu.
- Accept my position as a candidate/pledge with all the LOVE, TRUTH, and HONOR showm by all Sigma Nu's in the past.
- Act in a mature way, always upholding the high moral standars encouraged by Sigma Nu.
- Respect and uphold the needs of my pledge brothers, as well as the active brothers of Sigma Nu fraternity.
- Wear my candidate pin on all occasions when it is permitted.
- Be present and timely for all meetings and functions, informing the Novice Marshal beforhand if I am unable to attend.
- Manage my time skillfully so that I can maintain maximum academic achievement.
- Keep myself physically fit, for a sound mind needs a health body.
- Show resect and consideration for all Brothers and the position they have earned as a Knight in Sigma Nu Fraternity.
Candidate/Plege Class Requirements:
PRINCIPALS: Each candidate will be responsible for following and respecting the principals of Sigma Nu: LOVE, TRUTH, and HONOR.
EDUCATION: Each candidate is required to develop a broad understanding of the history, ideals, and direction of our chapter and the General Fraternity. This includes keeping up with weekly assignments and passing weekly candidate tests and a final exam.
STUDY TABLES: Study table swill be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6-9pm in thge house library (fishbowl). You are required to attend these study tables and study together as a candidate/plege class. Work done must strictly be academic. Please use this time wisely, for throughout the candidate/pledge semester, your time will be demanded in accomplishing candidate/pledge class tasks. Time management plays a HUGE part in your evaluation as a candidate.
ACADEMICS: Each candidate will maintain the highest possible greade point average. Shcolarship is the primary resonponsability of all students and the reason you are attending the University of Colorado in the first place. The inability to maintain your GPA expectations will affect your membership status. Any major problems in school related to activities should be brought to the attention of the Novice Marshal immediately.
PADDLES: All canidates will participate in paddle talks with all acive members of the fraternity and recieve their signature upom completion of these talks. You are expected to receive a specific number of signatures on your paddles each week by Monday meeting.
PURSUIT OF BROTHERHOOD: It is the duty of each candidate to actively pursue an enriching brotherhood within its candidate blass and within the chapter. This includes showing Love, Respect, and Trust to all intitiates and fellow canididates at all times.
ATTENDANCE: Candidates must attend all meetings, retreats, and all candidate class functions. (Chapter meetings are held every Monday at 6:30pm unless otherwise noted) In addition all candidates are to attend all functions designated by the Novice Marshall.
CANDIDATE RETREATS: During the candidacy, the candidate class will participate in at least one overnight retreat. The places and dates should be arranges so that all candidates can attend. The Novice Marshall, and a designated candidate will organize the format. The retreat will consist of discussion of group projects, fulfillment of the goals of the pledgeship, and activeties that help build brotherhood and trust within the class.
CANDIDATE CLASS OFFICERS: Candidate class officers will organize evnets in their prospective areas. Each will be in charge of the execution of his responsibilities. Cooperation by all members of the candidate class is mandatory, but the officers will have no greater voice than any other candidate in the class direction or activities. All officers are expected to communicate with their corresponding officers in the chapter to better coordinate their efforts with those of the chapter (i.e., Pledge Class President with the Commander, etc.).
L.E.A.D. PHASE ONE SESSIONS: Throughout the candidate process, the candidate class will complete Phase 1 of Sigma Nu Fraternity's L.E.A.D. program. Outside of candidate meetings, candidates will be required to attend each session.
CANDIDATE REVIEW: The chapter will conduct ( at its discretion ) at least one full candidate review session in which every candidate will be discussed. This session will be attented by brothers only and will consist of the chapter discussing a candidate's perfromance of lack thereof. While a candidate may be removed for any reason, the main purpose of the review session is to remove those candidates who have not exerted enough effort and has therefor not proved himself at the level required for initiation.
TWO YEAR LIVE-IN REQUIREMENT: All members are required to live on property and be part of the meal plan for at least two full years. Failure to do so may result in suspension and/or expulsion from the fraternity. The purpose of this requirement is to create further bonding between the brothers in the house, as well as maintain the uniques property that we currently have.

CANDIDATE FEE - $90.00
(Paid online to Sigma Nu Nationals via web site - one time only payment)
CANDIDATE MEMBERSHIP DUES - $310.00
(Paid to Sigma Nu Chapter - used to pay Sigma Nu National for programing, risk managment, and to CU IFC membership)
CANDIDATE INITIATION FEE - $220.00
(Paid online to Sigma Nu nationals via web site - one time only payment)
COST OF LIVING IN (subject to change):
MEMBERSHIP DUES - $450.00
(Per semester paid to Sigma Nu Chapter - used to pay Sigma Nu Nationals for programing, affiliation, risk managment and to CU IFC membership)
MEAL PLAN - $1965.00
(Per semester [aid to Sigma Nu Chapter, reviewed yearly)
RENT - $765.00
(Paid monthly to Sigma Nu Chapter, utilities are seperate, reviwed yearly)
SECURITY DEPOSIT - $1530.00
(Per Person paid to Sigma Nu Chapter, once a year due at lease signing, reviewed yearly)
